LED technology has come a long way in the past few years. A little over 2 years ago the first LED replacement headlight bulb was introduced and it had some pretty decent results. The LED chip was made by Samsung and produced between 1200-1300 lumens of light. The headlight bulbs utilized a single upward facing LED chip which actually produced some good results when installed in a reflector type housing. Fast forward to today and the LED headlight bulbs now can produce up to 3000 lumens of light from a single bulb. This is about 2.5 to 3 times brighter than a traditional halogen bulb and is on par with many HID conversion kits.
With the continued development of LED lighting, replacement LED headlight bulbs will just get brighter and become more efficient. At this time most LED headlight bulbs use a Cree 1512 LED chip which is installed on the top and bottom of the bulb. The one drawback initially to these bulbs is the Cree LED chip was very susceptible to heat and if the LED chip did not get enough cooling they would burn out fairly quickly. We found this to be the case with may of our H4 Cree LED Headlight bulbs. The problem was that the fan was detachable and if it wasn't placed directly behind the bulb, many of the LED chips would burn out. This problem was solved with the latest version and heat doesn't seem to be an issue at this time.
The latest LED chip that is being used will be the Cree MT-G2 Chip. This new LED chip is brighter than the 1512 chip and should produce up to 3000 lumens of light when both the top and bottom LED's are lit. At this time the only bulbs available are H4, H7, H8, H11, 9005 and 9006. The H4 bulb will be a high/low bulb and produce about 1800-2000 lumens in low beam mode and 3000 lumens in high beam mode. This new LED headlight bulb will produce great results in your headlight housing.
Advantages to LED Headlight Bulbs:
- They reach 100% brightness instantly, just like halogen
- Up to 3 times brighter than a traditional halogen bulb
- Will work with day time running lights
- Will work with auto on headlights
- can last up to 40000 hours
- Very energy efficient compared to halogen bulbs slightly more efficient compared to HID
